Ipswich & District Ramblers

Chair's Chatter from Isla Clough - March 2018

Welcome to 2018 with Ipswich & District Ramblers Group

2017 had some changes to the Walks Programme. Walks are now submitted using phone or email via 3 named walks coordinators. The final programme will appear on our website from the beginning of March 2018. The advantages of this system are accessibility and flexibility.
Walks can be added or changed using the website. For example closure of the Orwell Bridge prevented Geoff’s walk of taking place. The cancellation was noted on the website and details were given for the rearranged later date.

People who have requested a printed programme receive a copy printed from the website, delivered by post or by hand.

18 October
Map & Compass Reading training - 14 people attended and it was considered a successful activity.

8 November AGM. A 4 mile walk was followed by the AGM and a soup and pudding lunch. The feedback was positive on all activities, however four members expressed concern about the discontinuation of printed copies of the walks programme.

5 January The Ramblers Festival of Winter Walks
Four walks were in the programme plus two professional Park Ranger guided walks around Holywells Park. This was funded by Ramblers UK Winter Walks project. 22 people attended. We offered a taster led 4 mile walk the following day to encourage new members. Six people came.
2 May Thames Walk. 8 miles from Richmond to Hampton Court Palace, now fully booked
9 May Afternoon Tea & Cakes Walk – a chance for a social chat with refreshments, including a celebration for Geoff Knights who has been leading walks for 30 years in the Group. An amazing achievement!
26 May - 3 June Ramblers Walk About Festival
Ideas for walks which include “hidden gems” (Ramblers theme) will be welcome.
I’m trying to arrange another Park Ranger led walk around Chantry Park.
18 June 3 nights away on the Group Holiday to Eastbourne
12 July Summer Picnic & Walk

Other News

Update on Footpaths and Net Rail inquiry. There has been lots going on with this, please see Geoff’s post on the website.
Data Protection Act is a major change which will affect the Rambler’s members. Advice will be available from Ramblers HQ before the deadline for implementation at the end of May.

Walk Leaders' Check List advice suggests all members on walks carry a card with their contact details. We do hand out cards but we will buy some key rings, as used by other Groups in the area very successfully, so members on walks can add their details. (For example, if someone carries an Epipen.) The key rings will be equivalent to I C E (In Case of Emergency) cards. Please do have a look at the Committee Members list so you can approach a real person. Some people have even added a photo.

The Committee are always pleased to receive any comments, particularly suggestions for activities which you can help us with. Last time I counted there are 9 people on the committee so any help with implementing your ideas is just so welcome.
I look forward to seeing you on a walk or at an event.
