Twenty five Ipswich Ramblers spent a few days in Bakewell where walks were planned for Monday - Thursday 24-27th June. Many took advantage of this great location and stayed a bit longer. Individuals arranged their own accommodation in a wide range of B&Bs, AIRBNBs, Cottage Rentals,camping, etc.
On Monday morning Paul led a short walk out of Bakewell, along the Monsal Trail and back along the River Wye. We came back into Bakewell via the cattle market where cows with their calves were being auctioned. This used to be a regular activity in most market towns in East Anglia but most have now closed. I believe Colchester and Norwich are still open. A good gentle starter for the holiday.
Suitably refreshed, in the afternoon Sonia took us on a cultural walking tour around Bakewell and its immediate vicinity demonstrating that she had done her homework and ended up at the quirky Thornbridge Brewery, where drinks were enjoyed by all.
On Tuesday Jo took us on an adventure along Miller’s Dale along the River Wye. Somewhat challenging in parts across slippery rocks and stepping stones with a contrasting return along the easy and flat Monsal Trail. An enjoyable walk and a total contrast to what we flat earth walkers are used to in Suffolk. Two refreshment stops, one a treat by the leader added to the enjoyment.
Also on Tuesday, Stuart led this longer walk of just over 11 miles from Hartington. Brilliant start walking by the river, beautiful views, fabulous surroundings. The lunch stop at the charming village of Hartington gave an opportunity to enjoy local cheeses. After lunch the pull up to Heathcote Mere was challenging but enjoyable returning along the flat Tissington Trail. Overall challenging with the elevation but the views were spectacular and enjoyable.
On Wednesday Keith led a group from The Longshaw Estate car park along Froggatt and Curbar Edges with lovely views down over the Derwent Valley and returning via White Edge at a higher altitude with views down over the earlier route and also across the vastness of the great Moor to the east. Finally a steady descent to the Grouse Inn for well deserved refreshments.
Also on Wednesday a brilliant challenging walk of just over 10 miles led by David C who had researched the walk and provided interesting snippets of information en-route. Beautiful views from the top then a difficult walk down to the village of Darley Dale. Interesting stop at the grave of Joseph Whitworth the famous engineer.</
Wednesday evening Jo organised the traditional meal where we were all able to reflect on the walks over a good meal and a drink. Well done Jo.
On Thursday morning we met up at Chatsworth House for a short walk led by Stuart and Susan up to the Hunting Tower with its great views. On return many stopped at the Carriage House Cafe but Stuart and Susan led an intrepid band to the nearby Calton Lees Garden Centre for refreshments. An ideal finish before the drive home.
Sonia summarised the week as follows. The company was great, the option of long and short walks meant everyone found a distance they were comfortable with, the communication over WhatsApp meant finding the starts was easy and the holiday was so well organised that each day ran smoothly. The variety of routes meant we got to experience the different terrains for which the area is known, up hill and down dale, beautiful views all round.Here's to the next one!
Overall, an excellent holiday blessed with ideal weather for these superb walks. Thanks to all the walk leaders and the committee for putting it all together.
